Dr Sarah Alix, an Initial Teacher Training Programme Director with the Sigma Trust, is celebrating today as her second book enters production ahead of its official launch in September 2023.

The Neurodiversity Handbook for Trainee Teachers supports the knowledge and development of trainee teachers and will assist them to understand the complexities of working with neurodivergent pupils.

Working in teacher training has driven Sarah’s passion for writing books to support those working in the education sector.

As part of her role within the Trust, she is directly responsible for developing content and overseeing teacher training programmes as well as supporting staff and trainees to develop as educators.

She said: “I am delighted that this book has gone into production because understanding a neurodivergent world is so important in society today – and vitally in the classroom.”

It follows in the footsteps of her first book The Foster Carers Handbook on Education – Getting the best for your child, which was developed as a result of Sarah’s interest in working with Looked After Children (LAC).

Sarah, who gained her SENCO award and a Post Graduate Certificate in Autism a few years ago, has a personal interest in autism, as her son has ASD, and her family are Neurodivergent.

“I’ve written blog pieces supporting teachers with ways in which they can support LAC as well contributing to writing statements for Department for Education education frameworks to include support for LAC,” she said.

“The biggest reward of a career in education is seeing children progress, as well as the moments of development, whether that’s with children or trainee teachers.

“The best part of working with trainees is knowing they, in turn, will make a huge contribution in education and the lives of the children they teach.”

The mum of three has juggled raising a family and being a single parent with the demands of working full time and undertaking intense study to become an education specialist, a published author and the Initial Teacher Training Programme Director with the Sigma Trust.
