A SIGMA Sixth Rugby Academy duo have made their league debuts for professional rugby league club London Broncos.

Sigma Sixth Rugby Academy graduates Rob Oakley, Will Blakemore and Jonah Varela were offered and all signed professional contracts with Broncos, at the start of the Rugby League season.

And Oakley and Blakemore both made their league debuts in the recent home league game versus Swinton Lions, contributing to a fine 38-24 victory.

Academy coach Pete LeMarquand said: “This is a reward for their dedication and attitude towards training and wanting to be professional players.”

The trio studied, trained and played for the Sigma Sixth Rugby Academy and progressed via Colchester-based Rugby League Club, Eastern Rhinos.

They secured first-team contracts with London Broncos last October.

Blakemore, whose preferred position is loose forward and Oakley, who has played as a half back but more recently converted to hooker, came through the junior ranks with Rhinos.

Speaking to the Gazette last October, coach Le Marquand said: “All three of them have worked hard and now they’ve got the reward for it, so I’m really happy for them.

“They’ve all taken to it and done really, really well.

“They’re all dedicated, so I knew they had a chance.

“It’s very difficult to be a professional sportsman, so I knew they had a chance.

“Jonah and Rob were very good when they joined the Sigma Sixth Sports College as well as doing rugby in their spare time, with the purpose of going as far as they could in rugby.

“Jonah joined us and immediately started trying to go to as many trials as possible – he got spotted and the rest of history.”
